You should put up a mobile version. Thank you so much for the fascinating (if a bit out there) take on human history. My spouse got me to read Ishmael and MI. I can't say they blew my mind, but I can't say either that I disagree. I do thing that perspective is everything, that behavior comes from framing (well, thought, then behavior).

I will admit that, despite what people claim, there is not much writing that changes the way people think (we see what we want and pick and choose what we read anyway (ovlbviously)). A very few things have really gotten through my somebody-trying-to-change-the-way-i-think filter.

Ishmael might be one of them. Very possibly.

Well, I hope people are aware of the quite different --- but not necessarily contradictory --- perspectives out there available in books such as SEX AT DAWN and GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL. I'm currently finishing THE BOTANY OF DESIRE, which explains the curiously intimate relationship to plants we humans have evolved (and does so in a very Martian way, if you understand my meaning).

So, possibly, another mind "changed." Well, I think I prefer "inspired," maybe.

My thoughts are mine but you may have inspired me to think things I wouldn't have thought.

Jan--Here is a message for you from Daniel Quinn:

Thank you, Jan, for this wonderful message. As pleased as I am to receive such praise, I am also deeply humbled and frankly astounded that I was actually able to realize my life's work so completely. Be well. Daniel

For Daniel Quinn I am 70. I have had a stroke, 16 months ago, but it has only caused me to walk with a slight limp and my rt hand is a bit spastic.Now that I'm reading MY ISHMAEL, and have read ISHMAEL and THE STORY OF B, I have this to say: I have been reading all my life, have raised 3 children and have five grandchildren. I am well educated, and my 47 year old daughter is in law school. She lives in a rental house on the property, which I still own, and manage in spite of the stroke. I understand why someone wrote that if they burned all the books, he/she would guard ISHMAEL with his/her life. Daniel Quinn is the father we all wanted to have. He was the FIRST person to tell me that East and West are the same culture. Almost in the same breath(I know he presents his ideas in small easy to read novels), he wrote that all religions are control mechanisms and that our culture, as it is lived, will surely die. THANK-YOU. You will hear from me again. Jan

Hi, folks.

With DQ's permission, Lance Pierce and I have produced a booklet PDF version of one of his speeches, "Our Secret Plan" (originally titled "On Investments"). If you haven't already read it, you can go to the "Things to Read" section and click on "Essays and speeches" to do so.

We also offer a PDF of a trifold flier I wrote called "Tunnel Vision: How We're Thinking Ourselves and Our Children to Death" which explains some of DQ's most important ideas. I sent it to DQ years ago and he told me I could distribute it with his blessing and use one of his drawings of Ishmael on the cover.

I and other KC area Bs have been distributing various versions of DQ's works in the Kansas City area for several years now. What this means is that we leave them at libraries, coffeehouses, bookstores, and the like for people to pick up, not that we stand on street corners passing them out. I'm not saying that such an approach would be "wrong," but I think it's best to let people come to these ideas on their own, when they're ready. If you'd like to be able to distribute them in your own area, send me an email (willowjohn at and I'll email you the PDFs.

In addition to the pamphlet masters, I also have a few other things you might find of interest:

- A 1992 story about DQ from a publication called Inquirer (e-mail copy);

- A 1997 interview with DQ from The Sun magazine (e-mail copy);

- A 1999 article about DQ from Texas Monthly magazine (e-mail copy);

- "Beyond Civilization," an interview with DQ that originally appeared in the magazine Common Ground (HTML attachment);

- "The Holy," an interview with Daniel Quinn published in the November 2002 issue of The Spook magazine (PDF attachment);

- MSWord Files delineating the revisions made to Ishmael, The Story of B, and My Ishmael when they were released in later editions;

- An essay by Ronald Wright (author of Stolen Continents) called "Civilization is a pyramid scheme" (HTML attachment);

Let me know if you would like any or all of the above items. I hope to hear from some of you soon.

And here are some other resources on the web that I've found quite valuable:

-"The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race," an essay by Jared Diamo (author of Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies)

- "Places to Intervene in a System," an essay by Donella Meadows which offers an introduction to systems thinking, the discipline that Quinn seeks to apply through his books

- " Dancing with Systems," another essay by Donella Meadows

- "The Lost People," an essay by Thom Hartmann (author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight)

Absolutely incredible novel, quite possibly the most personally affecting one I've ever read. I love that there is a world view based on LOGIC and a beautifully written observation of what we're doing as a culture. I'm more inspired than ever now to be live sustainably and help to spread the ideas in the novel around. I definitely will be recommending this to my family, friends, and peers.

I read Ishmael and was sobbing afterwards. Thank you for this book. And I want to read your other books. You all are refuge in the storm.... I'm glad I found your book. Vicki Anderson

Daniel comments:

Although hundreds of readers have told me this (in many different words), I never cease to be astonished, humbled, and of course profoundly gratified to learn that I somehow managed to accomplish such a thing!

I first read Ishmael over 12 years ago, and to this day, it stands as the moment in my life in which my eyes were opened and my undefined anxiety was concisely identified. I was shown what I had somehow known all along, but couldn't quite put my finger on. My Great Awakening. I now see a world full of people running mad searching for answers, and these people do not even know the correct questions.

Thank You Mr. Quinn you changed my life

Nine months ago, on a recommendation from friends, I picked up a copy of Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá's book SEX AT DAWN.

Granted, we're still small. But we're committed to growing sustainably; to adding real tribal members, as Quinn might say.

It's quite personal revealing this, but it feels right to step outside my comfort zone.

Hey Gang!

On-line there is this most important book ever read thing, at a new age site, and Ishmael has only 5 votes. This definitively should not stand!

Lets up the ante...

Just finished reading Ishmael for the 4th time. It continues to be my favorite book to date. Just opens the mind and makes you think. Thank you so much for writing such an eye-opening and inspiring book. I absolutely loved it.

I have discovered that the best answers to my questions about Jesus and the new testament are available from Bart D. Ehrman. I hope Mr. Quinn has discovered this wonderful author.

Thanks for your post Andrew. I'd like to add that there is an announcement about the site you mentioned and a couple of other new interactive sites at the Home page and What's New links on this website.
