  • Tales of a Shamans Apprentice by Mark Plotkin has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Harned...and Michael has this to say about the book: "Mark takes us into a world of ancient healers, he shows us how quickly we are all losing the knowledge of healing plants and all other forms of the forest. How takers try to steal this priceless wisdom with no hesitation, and then try to create a synthesized form and sell it for money. Good health should have no price! Mark also talks a lot about how these people should be left alone, they’ve lived without the ‘help’ of takers for all time, and it is my dreams that they will continue living in harmony. Eternal Entity Renewal! "
Check out and/or Order Tales of a Shamans Apprentice from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice by Mark Plotkin has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bill Finney...and Bill has this to say about the book: "The taker culture is gradually wiping out the Indians of South America and along with them their centuries-old knowledge of the plants and animals of their world; not to mention the plants and animals of our world."

  • Talking With Nature by Michael Roads has been suggested by Ishmael Network member kevin bethel...and kevin has this to say about the book: "This book is the journal of a man who learned to do in real life what Ishmael did with the characters in both books. • Tao of Pooh, The by Benjamin Hoff has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "I've read the Tao Te Ching, and maybe others would interpret it differently, but I like Hoff's approach. In addition to being a whole lot of fun, it's really in tune with Leaver thinking."
Check out and/or Order Tao of Pooh, The from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Tao te Ching by Lao-Tzu (trans. Stephen Mitchell) has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Richard C...and Richard has this to say about the book: "Despite being written after the spread of the Great Forgetting, the Tao te Ching embodies a great amount of the old wisdom: humanity being only one part of nature, the absence of absolute morality, and the presence of a natural order and law outside of the will of humanity (the Tao). Mitchell's translation clearly brings out these elements, due much to his 14 years of Zen training, a great path for unlearning taker culture."

  • Te of Piglet, The by Benjamin Hoff has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "A great follow-up to "The Tao of Pooh." Less overview, more details, still in tune with Leavers. The book is about Te - the Virtue of the Small."

  • That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Liz Baldwin...and Liz has this to say about the book: "This book is the third in C.S. Lewis' interplanetary fantasy series for adults (They're all great). • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jeremy Resnick...and Jeremy has this to say about the book: "This novel relates to Quinn's vision because it too deals with a central figure (narrator of 'Ishmael' and Huck) who find themselves trapped or imprisioned in a society that they do not totally understand, yet on some instinctual level they know is not quite right. However, Huck finds himself derided on his quest for a better way to live by the epitome of a Taker culture (Tom) and any progress Huck made on his voyage is seemingly lost. However, I think if you carefully re-read the last chapter, you will see that Twain does offer a glimmer of hope in what Huck calls "the Territory"."

  • The Arrogance of Humanism by David Ehrenfeld has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kirk Knighton...and Kirk has this to say about the book: "I was directed to this book a couple of years before Ishmael came out. Though not a novel (and hence not as enjoyable to read) this book is definitely in league with Daniel Quinn's ideas - and it is very well written. The author is a regular contributer to Orion magazine. He really keys in on the mythology of our human arrogance, much like the Taker idea presented by Daniel Quinn. I regard this as one of my ten most important books."
Check out and/or Order The Arrogance of Humanism from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

The Ascent of Humanity is about Separation: its origins, its evolution, its ideology, its effects, its consummation and resolution, and its cosmic purpose. More than anything, The Ascent of Humanity is about how to create the more beautiful world our hearts tell us is possible."
Check out and/or Order The Ascent of Humanity: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Krishnamurti has been suggested by Ishmael Network member David Cloyd...and David has this to say about the book: "Krishnamurti suggests that only you hold the answers to the ending of suffering. his teachings may not hold the key, but they do hold a key to understanding the way the mind works, and offers you tools to observing it."
Check out and/or Order The Awakening Of Intelligence from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Axemaker's Gift : A Double-Edged History of Human Culture by James Burke Robert Ornstein has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Alan Durham...and Alan has this to say about the book: "The BOOK'S argument is that the technological geniuses among us, "axemakers (or Takers)," improved our lives but also "redefined the way we thought, the values by which we lived, and the truths for which we died." We were given the world "in exchange for our minds." How? By valuing over all other human capacities the precise, sequential thought processes required to "cut-and-control" nature, each axemaker gift (arrowheads to microprocessors)--from prehistoric times to the postmodern global economy--has, at least on some levels, reinforced caste distinctions between people permitted by nature and/or nurture to be "axemakers" and all other human beings. After sketching generation upon generation of the axemakers' short-term technological solutions and their unintended consequences, the authors paradoxically see hope in a new axemaker gift: information available in a "webbed" (rather than sequential) format on decentralized computer networks could empower non-axemakers (Leavers) to find more holistic, long-term approaches to our species'--and the planet's--problems. For example: THIS WEBSITE!!!"
Check out and/or Order The Axemaker's Gift : A Double-Edged History of Human Culture from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order The Baby Book : Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Best of The Nation by Victor Navasky has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Andy Gillette...and Andy has this to say about the book: "This book is perhaps the most difinitive reference for American independent politics available. It is an important testament to the barrage of ideals and policies that arise from a collapsing culture. It can also provide and important starting point fo people who are interested in changing he world. While there are no groups, aside from this one, that I am aware of that share exactly the same opinions, there are several organizations working to understand and fight the same effects."
Check out and/or Order The Best of The Nation from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Betrayal of the self by Arno Gruen has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Brian Tidbury...and Brian has this to say about the book: "Presents a theory that, in the western world, we do not learn to become our true selves. Instead we become inauthentic, and as children we end up living in a sick society they never made feeling much as the inhabitants of an occupied country feel toward the occupiers. As adults we continue to live in a diminished society to avoid helplessness by participating in power, and the humiliating knowledge of our original decision to submit to power. "
Check out and/or Order The Betrayal of the self from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Biggest Secret by David Icke has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Taylor Barker...and Taylor has this to say about the book: "David Icke delivers powerful evidence of a world wide conspiracy against the human race for thousands, if not millions of years. Warning! It gets out there- his philosophies talk about sprirituality, the aliens out there and among us, the human condition. The views of Daniel Quinn and David Icke are similar in their effort to change peoples vision of life. They both stand alone as world wide figures in their world wide subject matters. Icke has been called "the most controversial author and speaker in the world.""
Check out and/or Order The Biggest Secret from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Body of God by Sally McFague has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nadav Tanners...and Nadav has this to say about the book: "This book is an excellent reconciliation of Christianity with a Leaver-like, environmentally inspired spirituality. Suggesting that the universe be viewed as "God's body" and identifying the environment as "the new poor," McFague suggests a way in which Christian theology can be used to create a vision of the world, not as a resource to be exploited, but as a sacred area to be revered and adored."
Check out and/or Order The Body of God from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Book of Learning and Forgetting by Frank Smith has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Melissa French...and Melissa has this to say about the book: "I read this book for a class about Educational Perspectives. A month or so later I read My Ishmael in my free time. The two or three chapters in which Ishmael and Julie discuss the education system brought back flashing memories of Smith's theories. To put it simply, Smith believes that real learning, or classic learning is effortless and permanent, a completely natural exprience that is more hindered than helped by a formal school environment. Concise and easy to read, it is a worthwhile read for all interested in a revolutionary view of education."
Check out and/or Order The Book of Learning and Forgetting from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The book of Mirdad by MIKHAIL NAIMY has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Shanti Frigge...and Shanti has this to say about the book: "Stunning tale of a teacher confronting the spiritual status quo."

Check out and/or Order The Book: On The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "If we are to start living in a different way, a tribal way, then we will have to look to renewable alternative fuel sources for cooking our food and heating out homes. This book give information on using wood fired ovens for baking bread. But these techniques could be adapted to cooking many kinds of foods that require "baking". In addition, the techniques of bread baking shown in Bread Builders speaks of a different rythme of life, in deed a different way of living. One not so rushed, or hurried, or frantic, but liesurely. Also I believe that a hearth loaf bakery is an excellant modern application of Daniel's advice on running a business tribally. Hearth loaves and artisan bread are enjoying a revival in popularity both for taste and for health reasons. This book may just provided some of you with a jumping off point for a successful, tribally run bakery."
Check out and/or Order The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Buddha In Your Mirror by Woody Hochswender et al has been suggested by Ishmael Network member S. D. Yana Davis...and S. D. Yana has this to say about the book: "This presentation of Nichiren Buddhism shows how the philosophy and concepts of Mahayana Buddhism, and specifically the Tendai-Nichiren schools, exactly parallel "animism" as defined by Daniel Quinn. This is important, I believe, because it shows that at least one spiritual movement, although it arose within "Taker" culture many centuries ago, grasped the same fundamentals that Mr. Quinn presents as "animism." Essentially, Nichiren Buddhism and "animism" say the same things, using different terminology. Mr. Quinn is quite right to include Hinayana Buddhist teachings with monotheistic religions in his writings. However, the Mahayana schools generally, and the Tendai-Nichiren schools quite specifically, are radically different, and, as noted, parallel "animism" as defined by Quinn. There are other books related to Nichiren Buddhism available in English, but this one is a good introduction."
Check out and/or Order The Buddha In Your Mirror from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Careless Society by john McKnight has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Chris Drury...and Chris has this to say about the book: "McKnight offers a critique of the professionalized service industry that nicely compliments Quinn's own arguments about how we create programs to deal with cultural problems. McKnight shows how competent communities have been invaded and colonized by professionalized services- with often devestating results. Simply stated, it is an illustration of what works and what doesn't when dealing with collective problems."
Check out and/or Order The Careless Society from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Case Against Lawyers by Catherine Crier has been suggested by Ishmael Network member David Castro...and David has this to say about the book: "It reveals the degree to which our culture has failed and how bad our laws really are."
Check out and/or Order The Case Against Lawyers from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Case against the Global Economy and for a Turn toward the Loca by Jerry Mander has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ruth Amundsen...and Ruth has this to say about the book: "A great series of essays by various powerful thinkers on how today’s globalized corporations are creating an untenable situation"
Check out and/or Order The Case against the Global Economy and for a Turn toward the Loca from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Cassini Division by Ken MacLeod has been suggested by Ishmael Network member david bowen...and david has this to say about the book: "Scottish Trotskyite Libertarian Ken MacLeod writes Hard SF (science fiction) that is VERY radical. In his fourth book, he presents an Earth that his come out of a dark century brought on by eco-fascist Greens in Europe. It's 2303 and the whole Inner Solar system is socialist: no monetary system, shared products, eco-industry like aquaculture and bionanotech. Sure, it's utopian in all its eco-luxury (no social repression or wasteful, decadent consumption, mind you!), but there's the threat of virtual post-humans emerging in Jupiter's atmosphere and a wormhole that leads to a world where the last remnants of capitalism exist in all its cathartic hedonism and dirty tech. These problems explore avenues of competition and cooperation in life systems and society, even touching on the awareness of memes changing human society constantly and rapidly. See also Iain (M) Banks, Kim Stanley Robinson, Ursula LeGuin, Peter Watts and Bruce Sterling's last novels before heading up the VIRIDIAN MOVEMENT!!"
Check out and/or Order The Cassini Division from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order The Celestine Prophecy from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Celestine Prophecy : An Adventure by James Redfield has been suggested by Ishmael Network member STEVEN WALKER...and STEVEN has this to say about the book: "Like The Story of B,it has a great storyline and also teaches a great message."

  • The Chalice & The Blade by Riane Eisler has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Julie Ann Thayer...and Julie Ann has this to say about the book: "A look at agrarian leaver cultures, proof from our past (ignored by those in whose ears Mother Culture croons too loudly) that agriculture need not be totalitarian, and that high civilizations need not be warlike, heirarchichal, or destructive! I found this in one of Quinn's books. It provides very useful and compatible additions to Ishmael's ideas, if it doesn't always agree with his version of 'the way we got this way' ("there is no one right way...")."
Check out and/or Order The Chalice & The Blade from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Chalice and The Blade by Riane Eisler has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Josie Kraft...and Josie has this to say about the book: "Explores in great detail our history prior to the agricultural revolution from a new perspective - Eisler's Dominators equate to Daniel's Takers, and her Partnership Society is the same as his Leaver Society. Provides enormous evidence of the existence and success of the Partnership societies, how they embraced the "female" ideals, worshipped the Goddess, and lived in harmony with the earth for some 30,000 years. Gives evidence that has been hidden or overlooked by traditional Taker historians and should be on every single high school history class reading list."
Check out and/or Order The Chalice and The Blade from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

It explores many of the topics introduced in "Ishmael" - war, human relationships, material wealth, and personal choice. I hope that it does the same for you. Please write to me and tell me what you think of it."
Check out and/or Order The Cider House Rules from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
