  • Ninja Vol. 2: Warrior Ways Of Enlightenment by Stephen Hayes has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "In Volume 3, I recommend chapters 1&2. Chapter 1 is titled Spiritual Purity:Ninja Morality in History and begins with this poem..... Ninjutsu skills in which we train would best be known as the art of winning. We will assist the sincere with out ability to win with the spirit. Their dreams become the force of our vision which become a vibrant intention taking shape inthe mind and weaving into the fabric of reality. Chapter 2 again deals with being emotionally manipulated by others. "The second lesson: work at transcending your emotions so that you do not always automatically respond with a defense even when a defense is not needed. This is realized through developing the mind." Again, Mother Culture has taught us from birth to react a certain way to certain things without thinking about them. By un-learning these learned reactions that Mother Culture has programmed us with, we can become free of her psychological influence."

  • Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Don Neeper...and Don has this to say about the book: ""Circling the world in the 1920s and '30s, Dr. Price and his wife found the same sinister pattern among "primitive" populations, whether isolated Irish fishermen, tribal Africans, Pacific Islanders, Eskimos, North and South American Indians or Australian Aborigines. Those groups that followed their traditional nature- based diets enjoyed good health and vigor, and those that turned to the "civilized" diet of processed, sugar- laden foods soon developed a variety of ills, including misshapen bones and teeth - and the situation worsened with each generation. Dr. Price's fascinating accounts of his discoveries, and the extensive photo documentation he provides, drive home the nutritional truths that are only now gaining general understanding, and Nutrition and Physical Degeneration remains an unequaled source of basic information." - Publisher Dr. Price labeled the foods most people eat today the "displacing foods of modern commerce" and his photographs graphically demonstrate why so many of us suffer through braces and other orthodontal problems as a rite of adolescent passage. His early childhood memories, his "stolen" childhood a subsequent "education" and "upbringing" among these French Missionaries, Some returns to his African community, unable to speak with his own people, until he (re)learns their ways. • One minute nonsense by Anthony de Mello has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Chukwunonso Anekwe...and Chukwunonso has this to say about the book: "The question I guess most face after reading Quinn is 'so what do I do/how do I live'. And this for me can be a silent temptation to begin 'programmes'. I don't think Quinn's books are merely meant to be read and assimilated intellectually. They are like a finger pointing at a new vision. But how does one begin to think differently without falling into the 'programmes' trap? i.e. 'i musn't do this, 'i must eat this' etc. I think de Mello's book answers this question quite perfectly. But be warned. This is not an easy book, like its author says. And to quote him further, 'it wa written not to awake but to enlighten'."

  • One World, Ready Or Not by William Greider has been suggested by Ishmael Network member raleigh werberger...and raleigh has this to say about the book: "this book provides the best way I have encountered thus far of integrating DQ's warnings into a macroeconomics or global economics course. Greider punctures the myths of global capitalism as a means to lift all boats, and unveils the human and ecological exploitation behind the transnational corporations success. Never boring, and terrifying in its vision of the apotheosis of universal takerism."
Check out and/or Order One World, Ready Or Not from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Original Instructions by Melissa Nelson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Xavier de la Foret...and Xavier has this to say about the book: "I think that, too often, our romanticized view of Native Lifeways leaves us with the impression that Natives were/are mostly spiritual people and that if we could just sing enough songs to Mother Earth and beat enough drums we'd be just like them. What I liked about the book is that it demonstrates that, yes Natives are spiritual, but they're also fiercely intelligent, careful planners, deep thinkers, amazing social engineers, and remarkably able to bring together both the short and long views on complex issues. The book is a proud demonstration of the Native ways to think about the world and I highly recommend it."

  • Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Brad Austin...and Brad has this to say about the book: "It relays much of the same message of DQ, but written about 35-40 years prior. C.S. Lewis is an amazing author and successfully relates an important theme to us through fictional fantasy work (as he has done before). I would suggest anything by Mr. Lewis, even (especially) his "children's" series, The Chronicles of Narnia."

Check out and/or Order Outposts : A Catalog of Rare and Disturbing Alternative Information from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Overshoot by William Catton has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ricardo Wurmus...and Ricardo has this to say about the book: ""Overshoot" is a remarkable book as every chapter is followed by a list of resources. Its claims are extensively sourced. Catton explains the concept of carrying capacity and argues that the demands of "Homo colossus" exceed the earth's carrying capacity. He draws many parallels from the past and links the illusion of limitless growth to the realities of the "age of exuberance"."
Check out and/or Order Overshoot from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jennifer Sterling...and Jennifer has this to say about the book: "This book begins with a teacher and an assignment: "Think of an idea for world change, and put it into action." It's a novel about a twelve-year-old boy who takes this assignment to heart. Although the book doesn't espouse any of the theories or ideas found in Ishmael, it does present one compatible idea of it's own, perhaps best described by the author herself: " . . . it proves that you don't need much to change the entire world for the better. • Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong, The by Laurence Peter and Raymond Hull has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "Peter refers to this book as the first study of "hierarchiology." While it doesn't deal with the evolution of hierarchies, it is absolutely extraordinary in its assessment of the inherently dysfunctional nature of hierarchies. Peter shows them to be inherently prone to incompetence and their participants to be often prone to boredom and dissatisfaction. Much of the material in here deals with elements that Quinn doesn't touch, providing great extra information and strong resonance with Quinn's works."

  • Planet Simpson by Chris Turner has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Candice Zawoiski...and Candice has this to say about the book: "If you watch television at all (in my view the easiest way Mother Culture lures us back to sleep), you'll probably find as I do that "The Simpsons" is the only thing on TV nowadays worth watching. In Matt Groening's own words, the purpose of The Simpsons is to "entertain and subvert", and the main goal of the show is to get people to question authority. This book is much more than an analysis of a great TV show-its a critical analysis of Taker culture throughout the time The Simpsons has aired (mostly 90s). It thoroughly covers such Quinn-like issues such as the feelings of alienation and hopelessness of youth and the expresion of these feelings through alternative/grunge music and DIY and punk culture, the rebirth of social activism, and the corporate world and mindset. The Simpsons is unique in that every week it reaches the mainstream with the message (although sometimes hidden) to subvert the dominant paradigm (i.e. Taker culture)."
