The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 137)...

I'm inquiring about the usage of the Internet and computer networks in general; while they do represent the fastest means of transferring information (or, more importantly, IDEAS), isn't this technology part of the problem? i.e, running on non-renewable resources, proliferation of taker culture (inherent within the consumerist technology industry), representing an explosion in the purchase of these goods, while being ignorant of the environmental consequences?

    ...and the response:

Are you suggesting that everyone who is truly concerned about the world should immediately get off the internet, stop writing books and articles, stop traveling to speaking engagements, get off the air, stop using computers to do research, and so on---leaving all these activities to people who don't care about the world? Would you have me shut down? Would you have WorldWatch shut down? Would you have Greenpeace and the Nature Conservancy and Cultural Survival all shut down? Beware falling prey to black-and-white, puritanical, zero-tolerance thinking that is not going to be of any help in solving our problems here.
