The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 409)...

When you started writing My Ishmael, did you intend it to be for a younger audience?

    ...and the response:

When I began writing My Ishmael, I was in fact thinking that it would be a book for a younger audience (which is something many, many people have asked me for). As the story developed, however, I saw that the material Julie was eliciting from Ishmael was too difficult for young readers. One high school teacher who has used Ishmael in his history class for many years told me that My Ishmael would be too difficult for his students.
