The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 777)...

Wouldn't all the world's problems disappear if the food was no longer under lock and key, make free for all?

    ...and the response:

Unlocking the food, making it free for all, sounds like a wonderful idea, but think . . . What would farmers use to buy seeds if the food they grew brought them no money? What would the food processors use to pay their workers if what they processed was given away free? What would the distributors use to pay their shipping costs if they charged nothing for the food they shipped? And what would the supermarkets use to obtain food and to keep their stores open and their employees paid? Our whole money economy is based on keeping the food under lock and key (and would collapse if it wasn't). I don't think many people would support a program that would produce a complete global economic collapse.
