The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 98)...

I object to your suggesting that Jesus is especially well-suited to Taker culture. There's nothing in his teachings that supports our selfish, greedy, destructive lifestyle. His vision was one of unselfishness and love, not destruction and greed.

    ...and the response:

I nowhere suggest that Jesus's teachings SUPPORT "our selfish, greedy, destructive lifestyle." What I say in THE STORY OF B is almost exactly the opposite, that Christianity is meaningful in our culture because it CONDEMNS "our selfish, greedy destructive lifestyle." All the major religions of our culture are like long-suffering wives who are always trying to get their loutish husbands to raise their eyes to higher things. Jesus did indeed preach unselfishness and love, and this is exactly what makes him a prophet for TAKERS. Or to put it another way, Christ is precisely the prophet that Takers know they NEED, and this is why they value him; he tells them what wicked folks they are, and they know this is what they NEED to hear.
