The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 141)...

I wanted to get the opinion of Mr. Quinn regarding The Natural Step. From what I know, The Natural Step came out of Sweden and is a methodology for reaching consensus on environmental issues. They work with businesses to try to emulate natural, cyclical cycles instead of the linear ones that are in place today. They also are striving to preserve diversity of species. I think the ideas they have are great at utilizing business to work in more sustainable ways. I would like to know what you think.

    ...and the response:

The Natural Step is, in my view, the most powerful and promising program out there. I speak of it as a program because that's what it is---a stick planted in the riverbed to impede the flow of the Taker vision. Like the "recycle, reduce, reuse" program, it's something Takers can do even while holding onto the Taker vision. I endorse the Natural Step unreservedly. Its official spokesman in the U.S. is Paul Hawken, author of THE ECOLOGY OF COMMERCE.
