  The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 153)...

    I'd like to know if human overpopulation was inevitable. The fact that it *did* happen seems to make a strong case that was always possible that it *would* happen--if not 10,000 years ago, maybe 10,000 or 100,000 years in the future.

    ...and the response:

    That it was possible is obvious (since it happened). That it was inevitable is a philosophical question that is fundamentally unanswerable. Some people would say that it was inevitable that you would ask this question---the proof being that you DID ask it.
