The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 374)...

When I talk to people about controlling the population of the Earth, the subject of birth control often comes up as a potential solution. I can say all I want that "birth control might work on an individual level, but it doesn't work on a group level," but I don't really have any facts to back up this claim. What arguments can I put forth to back up the claim that birth control won't work to control our population as a whole?

    ...and the response:

This two-video program on the subject by me and biologist Alan Thornhill will be very helpful to you. But even so, the only "facts" that can be put forward to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of birth control are these: it didn’t work last year or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that or the year before that---so why exactly is it supposed to work next year or the year after that or the year after that? How many years of failure do your friends have do see before they’re convinced? And why should you be the only one who has to provide facts? Where are THEIR “facts,” showing how effective birth control has been? It’s been around for a long time, and if it’s so effective, why has our population doubled in forty years? When is it suddenly going to START being effective?
