  • The Rhetoric of Diversity and the Traditions of American Literary Study: Critical Multiculturalism in English by Lesliee Antonette has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Lesliee Antonette...and Lesliee has this to say about the book: "Chapter four, in particular, offers a model of critical pedagogy that can produce effects similar to those produced by the midwifery performed by Ishmael. This pedagogy informs student and teacher through an examination of the relationship between those roles that occurs as a necessary part of the classroom experience. The course used as an example is Freshman composition. However, it can be adapted to any discipline, and any level of instruction at the university level. Its intended function is to "change minds." Chapters one and two offer an historical and critical overview of the function of muliticulturalism in the American university, and chapter three illustrates how that has informed the ways in which we read and acscribe value to a given text. It is really not a stretch to see the ways in which multiculturalism as a non-critical practice serves the reproduction of Taker culture. The author moves to define a "critical" multiculturalism that "changes minds" with regard to the ways in which the dominant -"Taker" - culture conceives of and perpetuates the concept of difference."

  • The Riddle of the Sphinx: thoughts about the human enigma by Jay G. Williams has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jason Kopchak...and Jason has this to say about the book: "Honestly, one of the books I thoroughly enjoy having on my shelf. A resource of diverse viewpoints regarding the origins of humanity, how we interact, language and culture and the perception of the world, as well as the fundamentals of the cultural imprinting that occurs with us world-wide from infancy. Just as with Ishmael, My, and B, you may or may not agree with some of what is said--you don't have to, it will not demand you to change your perspective, merely offer you another one."

Scott Peck has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Paul Henneman...and Paul has this to say about the book: "The individual must confront "mother culture" in order not to be caught up in the "Takers" gift of words, materialism, and weapons. With social media available at the flip of switch, stroke of a key, social and individual "awareness" is sadly being commercialized, too. "
Check out and/or Order The Road Less Traveled from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Roots of Science: An Investigative Journey through the World's Religions by Harold Turner has been suggested by Ishmael Network member John Stonecypher...and John has this to say about the book: "Like Quinn, the author takes a very broad view of history, and notes the dramatic (and not entirely positive) shift that occured 10,000 years ago when what we call "civilization" began. At that time, critiques arose of the encapsulated cosmological worldview of the animists. One such critique was the dualist cosmos that eventually branched off into the philosophies of the Greeks, Persians, and the Far Eastern religions. It is this dualism that posits the strong separation between matter and spirit. Another critique arose within the Semitic peoples of the middle east, finding their focal point in Abraham. Here, the primary cosmological distinction was not between spirit and matter, but between Creator and creation. With this cosmological understanding of human history, the author (an anthropologist) observes how these 3 cosmologies affected the rise of empirical science."
Check out and/or Order The Roots of Science: An Investigative Journey through the World's Religions from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Isn't that basically what we're trying to counter?"
Check out and/or Order The Sacred and the Profane from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

The Satanic Bible is not about scary demons or hellfire, it is actually a book written from a very interesting perspective, that encorages people to see thorugh the fallacies confining them. We think our emotions, communication, and thinking ability's are unique to us. This book proves our culture wrong. Animals and plants have many abilities we think are unique to humans. They think, feel, show emotions, communicate, create, and learn. It is wonderfull to see how awesome life is and to realize we too are part of this spectacular community. Don't be scared becuase it's a biology book, it is easy to read and understand for even a novice, which I happen to be. Really, it's a book about life."

I began to view myself as a part of the larger natural community, as soon as I began interacting with the the non-human entities with which I now live. In order to see the connection between ecological health and human health, one must directly benefit from from biodiversity. If you think that people can stop destroying biodiversity with out a changed world-view, then you should read "Ishmael". • The Story of Stupidity: A History of Western Idiocy from the Days of Greece to the Moment You Saw this Book by James Welles has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bob Coleman...and Bob has this to say about the book: "A brilliant highly accessible book that clearly explains the psychosocial mechanism of stupidity. Stupidity is defined on page 1 as "the learned corruption of learning. ... learning is directed and controlled by a 'Schema' ... a schema is a system of belief ... This self-deceptive aspect of human nature is due to the role the schema plays in binding groups of people together." Further on page 7, "while genetics may limit such organisms' ability to learn, that does not qualify as stupdity, according to our definition." In other words, high-IQ people can act very stupid. And again on page 128, "stupidity is the obstinate attachment to a dysfunctional goal". The author discusses groupthink, cognitive dissonance and related concepts in a clear, simple, illuminating way. See the author's related listed book entitled Understanding Stupidity."

He also offers some new insights that I don't see in Quinn's work, and makes tons of sense. It's not fiction, though, and may require more concentration to read, for the attention-deficit."
Check out and/or Order The Tao of Philosophy from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jonathan Cohen...and Jonathan has this to say about the book: "As with the other Capra book recommended above, a bit technical. • The Teachings of Don Juan : A Yaqui Way of Knowledge by Carlos Castaneda has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Heike Rohde...and Heike has this to say about the book: "Many people think he's a liar. I don't. I think it doesn't matter. What matters is there's a possibility to develop a completely different view of the world, of perception and of reality. The books by Castaneda gave me an idea of one of the Leaver's views, of the rich mythology (what a bad name...) taught by Don Juan long before I read Ishmael. Compared with this explanation of the things our's is kind of primitive. There are different worlds we don't even know about (or forgot about long ago). The idea that there are different worlds, inhabited by different lifeforms, and that humans are able to discover these worlds, seems to develop the idea of respect. The idea that we are not as unique as we think. The idea that a tree has a conciousness and that there's a way for us to enter a universe where we can communicate with this consciousness will inevitably lead to the idea that a tree is as precious as a human being. There's one bad and one good news. The bad news is: there are lots of books by Castaneda you have to read to understand. The good news is: there are lots of books you can read to understand."
Check out and/or Order The Teachings of Don Juan : A Yaqui Way of Knowledge from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Walking People by Paula Underwood has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Amanda C...and Amanda has this to say about the book: "I haven't yet read all of this book (it's quite long, but appropriate to read over a long period of time) It is AMAZING. It is the oral history of a native people, passed down through many generations, in the native language. Only now written down and translated into English. The wisdom contained here about living, working together, how growth happens in a group of people, overcoming obstacles, dealing with adversity... is hard to underestimate. It has changed the way I think about what needs to be done in responding to our situation. It's also really.. rare to get such a clear picture of a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and of the world without giant civilization. I could go on and on. There are several good reviews on the Amazon page for this book. Go look it up in your local library and just read for 5 or 10 minutes and I think you'll see what I mean. This book is different from anything else I have read."

Metzner gives a summary overview of others' research (Marija Gimbutas is frequently cited) into theories of goddess-cult religion and matrilineal civilization in Old Europe, through examination of Northern European (principally Nordic) mythology. Discusses influence of invading "Kurgan" peoples from Asian steppe, including introduction of "sky gods" cult and patriarchal modality. Very interesting read (with a couple of zany tidbits thrown in by contributors for New Age appeal!)."
