  • The Culture of Make Believe by Derrick Jensen has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Joe Babiasz...and Joe has this to say about the book: "Daniel Quinn's books totally changed the way I view the world. "The Culture of Make Believe" completely dismantled what I was viewing."
Check out and/or Order The Culture of Make Believe from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Culture of Make Believe by Derrick Jensen has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Sam Patton...and Sam has this to say about the book: "This book talks about the basis of our culture in conquest and hate."
Check out and/or Order The Culture of Make Believe from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dark Tower #1-7 by Stephen King has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Paul Maceri...and Paul has this to say about the book: "This is Stephen King's magnum opus. While its relevance to DQ and his ideas may seem like a stretch to you, it just depends on how you look at things. The world in which this story takes place was destroyed by a culture identical to ours. The world has moved on after they destroyed everything with biological and nuclear weapons. Their technology was very advanced and they finally killed just about everything on the planet, including themselves. Of course, life goes on and this story takes place some 2000 years after the end of their culture. However, the effects of their great wars are still felt. This is just the backdrop of this grand tale and the bulk of it is not related."
Check out and/or Order The Dark Tower #1-7 from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Day America Told the Truth by James Patterson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jim Weiler...and Jim has this to say about the book: "I'm not sure how it relates to Daniel's books. For me, it is a wake-up call, a handbook for how to exist in the past and current American environments; helps me to recognize when I'm being myself, and when I'm being some other creation that is not me, the alien in me. I think it is not so easy, unless you recognize that you are being asked to lie, by those who are told to ask you that, by the big businesses they are protecting, all in the name of individual survival (yours). It's like a reverse daisy-chain. Many who read this non-fiction work use it to justify their beliefs that everything is going to hell in a hand-basket. I see it as hopeful; when one can know that he's lying, knows the reasons he's keeping the secrets, and can then feel whatever way he wants to after knowing that, this is a positive thing, as compared to justifying the lies out-of-hand. "Just because," as we used to say in our youths."
Check out and/or Order The Day America Told the Truth from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Day Philosophy Dies by Casey Maddox has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Xavier Sonnerat...and Xavier has this to say about the book: "This is an amazing book, and you'll get banged up just as much as the main character along the crazy ride of rewinds and fast forwards. Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions. This book made me stop and ponder, laugh out loud like I rarely do reading a book, stare at the pages in total disbelief, and madly leaf back to try to connect the dots. There is absolutely no way you can guess what the next page, or even paragraph, is going to say. Maybe because it's his first novel, the author has, in my opinion, tended to very slightly overrely on sex appeal and surprise. It would have been good without so much of it, although it doesn't really get in the way either. If you love Derrick Jensen's work, if you deeply despise western civilization and are ready to do something about it, you will absolutely love this book. In the end, I hope to see you at the beach. I'll be there. Buy the book from Derrick Jensen's website at http://www.derrickjensen.org/philosophy/index.html"
Check out and/or Order The Day Philosophy Dies from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Brian Mastenbrook...and Brian has this to say about the book: "It's a manifesto for clear thought. His observations and "Baloney Detection Kit" serve to sort out the lunchmeat of the many New Age beliefs sorrounding us."
Check out and/or Order The Demon Haunted World from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Raleigh Walsh...and Raleigh has this to say about the book: "This trilogy, provides an interesting look at who kill Boy Staunton. I admit it doesn't seem like it would have much to do with any of Daniel Quinn's works, but World of wonders goes into detail about travelling shows in the early part of this century and allows us to look at one sort of tribalism. The other two books provide curious insights that are interesting as well."
Check out and/or Order The Deptford Trilogy from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bob Coleman...and Bob has this to say about the book: "This timeless Antichrist lexicon challenges the most cherished institutions of society: love, marriage, law, religion, politics, patriotism, and art. Wit, the weapon of choice, is used to create one of the most deeply subversive books in the English language and thus an effective teaching tool. The author's collected works share a common theme: the fatal consequences of failing to see the world clearly. The dictionary entry for the word Delusion, n. The father of a most respectable family, comprising Enthusiasm, Affection, Self-denial, Faith, Hope, Charity and many other goodly sons and daughters."
Check out and/or Order The Devil's Dictionary from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Lloyd Beaton...and Lloyd has this to say about the book: "the book follows the main character Ray Smith on a journey of discovery. Accompanied along the way by his zen lunatic friend Japhy, Ray gets in touch with his innate buddha light and beauty of the world free of manipulation."
Check out and/or Order The Dharma Bums from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dilbert Future by Scott Adams has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Wythe Marschall...and Wythe has this to say about the book: "All of Scott Adams' Dilbert work showcases in startling clarity how evil Taker society has become. In many ways, we are each Dilbert, trapped in shitty jobs in shitty companies, lonely, disconnected. Scott Adams' work serves best to convert people over to Quinn's philosophies."
Check out and/or Order The Dilbert Future from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Dennis Koperdraat...and Dennis has this to say about the book: "It doesn't really relate to Quinn's theories but it's a very good look at (dis)utopian societies. I highly recommend it."
Check out and/or Order The Dispossessed from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Diversity of Life by Edward O Wilson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bev Courtney...and Bev has this to say about the book: "An account of biological diversity and its value. It should be read by all who don't understand why the elimination of our fellow species is such a dangerous undertaking for our future"
Check out and/or Order The Diversity of Life from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dobe Ju/'hoansi second edition by Richard B. Lee has been suggested by Ishmael Network member derek price...and derek has this to say about the book: "The Dobe Ju/hoansi is a great companion piece to My Ishmael. My Ishmael tends to deal in broader concepts, while this is a very specific field study. Although it was written before even the original Ishmael, it is a great read about the bushmen of botswana, or to be politically correct, the San or Dobe Ju/hoansi. It is an extensive first hand account detailing the way of life of one of the last intact leaver cultures, and discredits many of our society's common misconceptions of tribal life being brutal or difficult. Their way of life, as Quinn stated in My Ishmael, is based on giving support and getting support, compared to our society being more product based. After picking this book up, I could not put it down. It is a must-read for any fan of the Ishmael series."
Check out and/or Order The Dobe Ju/'hoansi second edition from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Domestication of the Human Species by Peter J. Wilson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ronald Stilwell...and Ronald has this to say about the book: "Our culture promotes a lifestyle of separation. We live in, or rather BEHIND, the walls of our separate houses and apartments. We seem to lock ourselves up in the same way we lock up our food. This book examines the implications of the settled life on our biology, social structures and vision of the world. It's a VERY specialized and narrow thesis, but it will stimulate thoughts about the larger issues that matter to us all."
Check out and/or Order The Domestication of the Human Species from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Dream of the Earth by Thomas Berry has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Juno Orion...and Juno has this to say about the book: "Thomas Berry is Ishmael personified"
Check out and/or Order The Dream of the Earth from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Earth Path by Starhawk Starhawk has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Stephanie Gerdan...and Stephanie has this to say about the book: "For those who want to engage in the "what to do" on a spiritual level, or those who want to get down & dirty and really affect change on many levels, Starhawk and her organization can be a great help. I think that this book can be very useful for everyone, even those who will ignore her ceremony and just read it for her long history of activism and her way of life. She speaks of her path that is a very bright version of a new tribal venture."
Check out and/or Order The Earth Path from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Earth Shall Weep by James Wilson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Fanona Grace Isaac...and Fanona Grace has this to say about the book: "Native American History from THEIR perspective!"
Check out and/or Order The Earth Shall Weep from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Earth Speaks by Steve van Matre has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Heidi Hopkins...and Heidi has this to say about the book: "Beautiful collection of readings from many authors. Selections grouped under "Earth Magic", "Earth Wisdom", and "Earth Spirit". Great addition to anyone's personal collection of inspirational reading."
Check out and/or Order The Earth Speaks from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • THE EASY OF THE SUPERIOR MAN by David Deida has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Destry G....and Destry has this to say about the book: "There are no definitive answers, but I'll offer this book anyway as a "definative" answer to the much asked question of what to do next. Potentially useful for both men and women, and those seeking to BECOME real men and women, this book has the balls to say the unsayable, and instruct directly and as specifically as possible those who would seek to take up Quinn's charge and transform themselves into the kind of person who can change the world by holding to the truth and penetrating deep with it into the heart and bosom of our hurting and deeply damaged culture. Basically, if Quinn's book teaches what B SAYS, Deida's book teaches how B IS... It's a primer on how to become the KIND of person who can stand up and say "I am B.""
Check out and/or Order THE EASY OF THE SUPERIOR MAN from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Stephen Dorage...and Stephen has this to say about the book: "Paul Hawken presents a compelling vision for a truly restorative economy. This is the book that instigated Ray Anderson's epiphany. A very readable business and biological text. A great read after the Ishmael trilogy."
Check out and/or Order The Ecology of Commerce from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter has been suggested by Ishmael Network member LeAnn & Paul Runge...and LeAnn & Paul has this to say about the book: "This is a great look at a tribal life that was (is) right here on our land. Beautiful in its simplicity, "Little Tree" is funny, sad, heartwarming, and insightful."
Check out and/or Order The Education of Little Tree from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Elegant Universe : Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory by Brian Greene has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Andrew Lincoln...and Andrew has this to say about the book: "An understanding of this young science is especially essential as we move into the 21st century. Very readable, very fascinating."
Check out and/or Order The Elegant Universe : Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Element by Ken Robinson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Court Donner...and Court has this to say about the book: "Focusing on how we learn and what we think we know, Sir Ken Robinson details deficiencies in our school systems and impediments to thinking in our society. His ideas on education reform could blend well with Daniel Quinn's ideas for learning/teaching in Providence and Beyond Civilization. (There is no 10-digit ISBN for this title; the 13-digit ISBN is 9780670020478.)"
Check out and/or Order The Element from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Emerald Forest by (Video) (Unknown) has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nova Green...and Nova has this to say about the book: "This is my favorite movie. It is a powerful story, which is claimed to be true. It will leave you with a different sense of the natural world, as seen and experienced by those who still know it. As the last screen states, "Those who still remember what we have forgotten.""
Check out and/or Order The Emerald Forest from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The End of Nature by Bill McKibben has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Adam LaMontagne...and Adam has this to say about the book: "Off the topic of population and onto that of pollution and the Green House effect, this book is something of a laundry list of horrible acts committed by humans on the Earth."
Check out and/or Order The End of Nature from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Ends of the Earth by Robert Kaplan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member T. gilsmith...and T. has this to say about the book: "Kaplan describes and reflects on his journey through some third world countries already on the downward spiral of Mother Culture's dissolution, describing the problems that lie ahead--overpopulation, migration of peoples from rural to urban areas, resource depletion, land degradation, irrigation depleting water tables, etc. Kaplan's conclusion is that these problems won't be solved by governments and large corporations. They will be solved locally by people responding to local needs. There will be many solutions because local needs will vary. I especially recommend the chapter on the Rishi Valley of India, which describes how a group of Indians replanted and reforested the land, inventing simple technologies to solve erosion/irrigation problems, while practicing a remarkable approach to teaching and learning."
Check out and/or Order The Ends of the Earth from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Enemies Of Anarchy by Robert Hunter has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Hardin...and Michael has this to say about the book: "This book illustrates that "civilization is coming to an end." Hunter reveals how various forces of environmental-collapse, technological-advance, and population-expansion synergize to compel the human race to "walk away" from a global system of organized anarchy and toward a system of large-scale integration or convergence. The book exposes the nature of civilization as the "mother of war". This book reveals who the real anarchists, and-as the title suggests-their enemies are."
Check out and/or Order The Enemies Of Anarchy from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and Others In Your Life by Helen Palmer has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Christopher Kyle...and Christopher has this to say about the book: "This book has done as much to change how I look at people as "Ishmael" did to how I look at the world."
Check out and/or Order The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and Others In Your Life from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Essene Gospel of Peace by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely has been suggested by Ishmael Network member b dub...and b has this to say about the book: "Szekeley's translations of these ancient scrolls provide evidence that the Essenes were a highly developed tribal society (leavers) that ocassionally sent messengers out among the "takers". Many seekers will be glad to discover teachings associated with Jesus (edited from the bible in the fourth century) that focus on the natural and cosmic Law (the Tree of Life is a central image in these teachings), and balance the individual's relationship to God (The Law), self and the community of life. Correspondences with other mystical and spiritual traditions seem well founded. All of this aside, there is some genuine beauty and inspiration to be discovered in the IBS books. If this is your first exploration into this material, I'd recommend the Essene Book of Creation first, then Biogenic Living, before approaching the Essene Gospel. "Gray are all theories, but green is the tree of life" - Goethe"
Check out and/or Order The Essene Gospel of Peace from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Evolution of Cooperation by Robert Axelrod has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Hummer Pleshe...and Hummer has this to say about the book: "Takers take; Leavers cooperate. This is an interesting study of the creation of cooperation. It has uts share of statistics but it also has some interesting observations on the game of Tit for Tat, of cooperating unless one is not cooperated with. It works :-) It's a classic in its field. Check it out in Amazon.com"
Check out and/or Order The Evolution of Cooperation from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Evolution of the Future by Frank Elwell has been suggested by Ishmael Network member George Wilbur...and George has this to say about the book: "A book that presents a vision of social evolution highly consistent with Quinn's (one that is based on anthropology and sociology). The system like character of exploitive cultures are examined in some detail."
Check out and/or Order The Evolution of the Future from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Evolving Self: a Psychology for the New Millennium by Michaly Csikszentmihalyi has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Tom Tomaka...and Tom has this to say about the book: "Dr. Csikszentmihalyi is better-known for his pioneering research into a psychological state of absorption that he termed "flow". In "The Evolving Self", he explains what we know about evolution, including the influence of genes and memes, and how they effect our behaviour and our cultural mythology. "The ideal reader is someone who is curious about the meaning of life, who feels none of the existing explanations are exhaustive enough, who is concerned about the state of the world, and who would like to do something about it." He surveys the biological, evolutionary, and social forces that have shaped us and made us the fantastic creatures we are today. By understanding such forces, we can free ourselves of the dead hand of the past. He proposes approaches to life that improve its quality and lead to joyful involvement. Finally, he reflects on ways to integrate this liberation and growth of the self with that of society as a whole. he finishes his book proposing a fellowship of the future, composed of many smaller evolutionary cells. These cells are composed of folks who regularly meet to think and to meld ideas. They meet to inform, understand, and (perhaps) act on the world around them."
Check out and/or Order The Evolving Self: a Psychology for the New Millennium from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse by Hermann Hesse has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Zoë Nathan...and Zoë has this to say about the book: "To Hesse, as an author and individual, convention was the mother of fantasy, the malady to which a deviant imagination was the only remedy. "The European" was a particularly poignant tale in this collection, employing satire to mock the self-importance that epitomizes Western culture. What it cleary delineates is that Western culture is just another arrangement of social organization, and not one inherently superior in its functioning than many other diverse forms of civilization. In his tales, Hesse, like Quinn, celebrates the diversity that sustains life on this planet and shoots a skeptical glance on the conventional wisdom of the West."
Check out and/or Order The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fall by Albert Camus has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Xavier Sonnerat...and Xavier has this to say about the book: "A book that digs deep into the human psyche, conscience, and social expectations."
Check out and/or Order The Fall from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fall: The Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of A New Era by Steve Taylor has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nicholas Chill...and Nicholas has this to say about the book: "'The Fall' gives a detailed account of our human history, giving us a glimpse into the past that we never new (or didn't want to believe). It gives researched accounts of how successful tribal life really was, and a time-line of how the tribal lifestyle began to fall. 'The Fall' takes you from the peaceful (Utopian) era of our prehistoric ancestors, to the self-destructive, violent, culture we are part of today."
Check out and/or Order The Fall: The Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of A New Era from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Corrie Barr...and Corrie has this to say about the book: "Peter has found a practical way to demonstrate how things happen in cyclical patterns and predictable archetypes. Without understanding how we bandaid problems, we are destined to repeat our mistakes - only they grow bigger with each failed attempt! I've personally used this work as a group training aid. A great read; well rounded with personal, group, and scientific principles. His other works are worthwhile additions to your library!"
Check out and/or Order The Fifth Discipline from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk (no other name) has been suggested by Ishmael Network member cindy ross...and cindy has this to say about the book: "This novel not only exemplifies Starhawk's ideal society (composed of small agrarian communities), but also demonstrates how a peaceful community successfully resists an aggressor without sacrificing its own principles."
Check out and/or Order The Fifth Sacred Thing from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk Starhawk has been suggested by Ishmael Network member david alfreds...and david has this to say about the book: "Sci Fi book about a Post Apocalyptic Leaver Society, which must "battle" a Taker Society. Great Sci Fi, great ideas on tribalism and pacafism. Another book that could change your life!"
Check out and/or Order The Fifth Sacred Thing from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Founders of America by Francis Jennings has been suggested by Ishmael Network member K Mattern...and K has this to say about the book: "In all of Francis Jennings' book the history of north america and its peoples is presented based on evidence from history and pre-history (a point made in Story of B, the whole hype about history versus pre-history). Jennings is a historian who has embraced the Great Remembering and he helps to tear the veil of the Great Forgetting by describing Leaver societies in great detail, based on evidence that includes obscure written sources. A quote from the rear cover: "The Europeans did not 'discover' America, Mr. Jennings makes quite clear; they invaded it and conquered its population." [And I might add, forcing a totalitarian agricultural way of life on the people here with much attendant suffering.] "We grew up on history written from the point of view of the victor: here now is the rest of the story, by the acknolwedged dean of American Indian history." FJ's writing is readable, accessible, broad, detailed, engaging, exciting and informative. He understands the relationships between Cain and Abel and how that has played out in North America, and is still playing out. All of his books are great, but this is the starting point! Read more of Jennings!"
Check out and/or Order The Founders of America from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order The Fountainhead from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • The Fragile Species by Lewis Thomas has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mike Sergeant...and Mike has this to say about the book: "Lewis Thomas is a highly educated person that seems to have grasped the beauty of organisms working together. He seems to go out of his way at times to refute the "Nature, Red of tooth and claw" mantra of our culture. He points out in some essays about the incrediable interconnectedness of all life . He talks about all matters of biological sciences from termite (absoultely facinating to relate the interconnectedness of life) to AIDS and nuclear war. A highly readable book from a man that has made most of the right connections."

  • The Gate to Women's Country by Sherri Tepper has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Regina Levoy...and Regina has this to say about the book: "A provocative and entertaining science fiction, this book touches on several of the concepts in DQ's books, but is perhaps more aligned with those in Eisler's "The Chalice and the Blade" (mentioned in "Ismael"). The author, Sherri Tepper, is clearly exploring territory close to what DQ expands on in his books, by presenting us with a scenario of three different kinds of cultures---and how they function and relate with each other in an uneasy future."
