Here is an easy to print list of everything...)

  • Radiant Joy Brilliant Love by Clinton Callahan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Clinton Callahan...and Clinton has this to say about the book: "For example, fear. Modern culture teaches that fear (and anger and sadness) are so-called negative feelings, bad feelings. But before you can do what DQ suggests, namely exit civilization, you must go to the edge of civilization. Beyond the edge of civilization is the unknown, and as you approach the edge you will feel fear, deep fear. If you have not gone through the rite of passage process of changing your relationship to fear, the fear will make you think that something is wrong with you, or that what you are about to do is dangerous. So you will go back. You will not be able to exit civilization. It does not matter how much better it is Beyond Civilization. If you cannot experience your fear as an adult man or woman and use its energy and information to guide you, you will never make the leap, not even the tiniest step. Radiant Joy Brilliant Love is a treasure chest of empowering clarity and thoughtmaps about fear, other feelings, rite of passage, relationship, communication, holding and navigating space, rapid-learning, High Level Fun... It's fantastic."

  • Rattling the cage-toward legal rights for animals by Steven M. Wise has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Antoine Kolmel...and Antoine has this to say about the book: "Aside from the deep study of legal facts about different views and relationship that our cultures have and have had toward animals, it speaks for tiself when proving that we have long set ourselves aside from the community of life."
Check out and/or Order Rattling the cage-toward legal rights for animals from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Re: Colonized Planet 5: Shikasta by Doris Lessing has been suggested by Ishmael Network member William Carrington...and William has this to say about the book: "Shows several cultures besides what exists on Earth today and supports many of DQ's ideas."

  • Real Lives by Grace Llewellyn has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Rose Draconis...and Rose has this to say about the book: "I noticed a chapter titled "Unschooling the World," I think, in _My Ishmael_, but I'm not sure Quinn ever went into depth on the subject of unschooling -- this book does."
Check out and/or Order Real Lives from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Real Magic by Wayne Dyer has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Rebecca Harrington...and Rebecca has this to say about the book: "Read this when you are ready to begin manifesting change in your own life. Check out and/or Order Real Magic from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Rebalancing The World by Carol Lee Flinders has been suggested by Ishmael Network member anna oleynik...and anna has this to say about the book: "The parallels are so astonishing that I assumed she was already in his following. However, she was unaware of Quinn's work. She began as a feminist searching for the origin of male dominance, and it lead her to see that the adoption of agriculture lead to a profound change in cultural values, to a loss of our way of being in the world, and a split between genders, as well as of our spiritual nature. If Quinn gives an outline, these are the details."
Check out and/or Order Rebalancing The World from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Reconnecting With Nature by Michael Cohen has been suggested by Ishmael Network member kevin bethel...and kevin has this to say about the book: "This book was designed to accompany a corespondance course at www.ecopsych.com but it is such good reading and fun to do the activities that I think many Ishmael readers would find it well worth their time (with or without the course, which can be taken for college credit by the way!). I think this book could help some of the Ishmael readers who finish Ishmael and want to find ways to "do something"."
Check out and/or Order Reconnecting With Nature from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Red Earth, White Lies by Vine Deloria, Jr. has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Lasek...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "It dispels the myth the infalibility of science/archeology, particularly how it is related to Native Americans."
Check out and/or Order Red Earth, White Lies from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Red Earth, White Lies by Vine Deloria, jr. has been suggested by Ishmael Network member raleigh werberger...and raleigh has this to say about the book: "Deloria presents "a brilliant critique of Western science," and questions everything we know of our origins as taught us in school. He argues that tribal wisdom is at least as valid a knowledge source as science does, and in some cases, human memory and intuition is a truer guide that reliance of scientific arrogance"
Check out and/or Order Red Earth, White Lies from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Chris Mueller...and Chris has this to say about the book: "The coops presented in Red Mars (and its sequels: Green Mars and Blue Mars) show a strong resemblence to the tribes proposed by Ishmael. The Mars books show that a tribal society can work."
Check out and/or Order Red Mars from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Red Moon: Understanding and using the gifts of the menstrual cycle by Miranda Gray has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kimber Score...and Kimber has this to say about the book: "This wonderful and enlightening book puts women back in touch with their bodies, their cyclic nature and their creative energies. A MUST READ FOR ALL WOMEN!! Remember, there is no one right way to be a woman. Be yourself! Break free from the linear mold of mother culture!"
Check out and/or Order Red Moon: Understanding and using the gifts of the menstrual cycle from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order Refuge from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Remembrances for Deep Living by James Swank has been suggested by Ishmael Network member James Swank...and James has this to say about the book: "This book is an introduction to a way of disconnecting from the effects of the conditioning that keeps us connected to the myth of Mother Culture. It is a fun and creative companion volume to "Deep Living: A path to happiness and fulfillment through honesty, courage, consciousness, and self-responsibility" which is a more comprehensive description of this world view and practice. These books look at the same issues Daniel writes about at the personal level as opposed to the global level. "
Check out and/or Order Remembrances for Deep Living from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Return of the Warriors by Theun Mares has been suggested by Ishmael Network member david Fiske...and david has this to say about the book: "The first of a series of books on the Toltec teachings it could be most useful for acquiring clarity in one's life and living in harmony within oneself and with one's community and environment. Furthermore if we go into a world increasingly racked and rent by sudden and unpredictable change it could help one have the objectivity and the " witness" quality to walk unperturbed and impeccably amidst the chaos. For those who know these things they can admire Theun's succinctness and lack of subterfuge and the way of putting it all very directly and unambiguously; for those to whom it is new they might well find it a good start of a wonderful journey."
Check out and/or Order Return of the Warriors from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Revolution: A Call to Holy War by Michael Brown has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Adam Sharp...and Adam has this to say about the book: "It calls for a rejection of the status quo, a rejection of the way Mother Culture encourages us to live, and a rejection of timidness and fear."
Check out and/or Order Revolution: A Call to Holy War from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community by Malidoma Patrice Some has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nathan Binnema...and Nathan has this to say about the book: "Malidoma Patrice Some is an elder of the Dagara of West Africa, one of the oldest indigenous cultures on Earth. I'll have to be careful here; I understand the lesson of "The Crystals of Rapanah," and why 'Ishmael' might be wary of yet another book about an indigenous culture's practices. I don't think Malidoma's books are just another Tava stone, however. Like Quinn, Malidoma intelligently elucidates general principles of an indigenous lifestyle, and how people in the West might apply these principles, instead of merely copying specific rituals or practices. The reason I find Malidoma's books to be so valuable is that Malidoma seems to be doing essentially the same thing as Daniel Quinn: explaining the principles of a Leaver, or indigenous, way of life - and yet Malidoma says very few of the same things that Quinn does. It is very instructive to note the differences between what Quinn, a Taker, notices about Leaver and Taker cultures, and what Malidoma, a Leaver, notices about Leaver and Taker cultures. The two authors complement each other so well because they cover each other's blind spots. "Ritual" is the smallest of Malidoma Patrice Some's books, and probably the best introduction. After reading "Ritual" go on to "The Healing Wisdom of Africa" and "Of Water and the Spirit.""
Check out and/or Order Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Rolling Thunder by Doug Boyd has been suggested by Ishmael Network member ben bruce...and ben has this to say about the book: "A written documentary on a Shoshone/Cheyenne medicine man named Rolling Thunder. His insights were remarkably similar to those found in Quinn's books, and they come from a man who has lived the life we all talk about on the internet."
Check out and/or Order Rolling Thunder from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Rachel Nishan...and Rachel has this to say about the book: "Bone is another of the generation forced to fix the world before he can begin to make a life for himself. As I read this book a first, second, third, fourth, and fifteenth time, I grew up right along with Bone, seeing what he saw, realizing what he realized, and coming to terms with the world and how to live in it without going crazy. This book is excellent on so many different levels, it's impossible to take it in its entirety in one reading."
Check out and/or Order Rule of the Bone from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Running on Emptiness: The Pathology of Civilization by John Zerzan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Xavier Sonnerat...and Xavier has this to say about the book: "The first half of the book is too esoteric for my taste and I don't totally agree with Zerzan's arguments. The second half is much better and concrete."
Check out and/or Order Running on Emptiness: The Pathology of Civilization from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Rustic Retreats by David Stiles and Jeanie Stiles has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "This little book takes a look at every thing from the old fashioned Lean-To, to the tree house, to River Rafts, to Wigwam, Tipi, Stacked Log Hogans, and the Yurt or Ger. Log Cabins and Writer's Retreats. Even the ancient Campfire Circle. A good book on being comfortable in the wilds or in your own back yard, anywhere you attempt to get "Beyond Civilization" to think. I enjoyed the chapters on On The Ground shelters and Primitive Native Shelters the most. Learning to work with local materials to provide one of the necessities of life can give you a new outlook on the world. Mainly, "Why would I want to kill off that which sustains and protects me?""
Check out and/or Order Rustic Retreats from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
