The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 20)...

What about the Leaver agriculturalists of Easter Island, who made their own ecosystem uninhabitable? Population skyrocketed and then plummeted to almost nothing. They don't seem like Takers exactly but they also don't seem like Leavers. What is your take on this?

    ...and the response:

Leavers are not (and were not) omniscient supermen or flawless environmental saints (and Ishmael works hard to avoid giving any such impression). They doubtless embarked on thousands of unworkable societal ventures. The remains of one of these adventures (by the merest chance of isolation) happened to be preserved on Easter Island. A failed Leaver society doesn't automatically turn into a Taker society any more than a failed automobile automatically turns into an Edsel.
