The Ishmael Community: Questions and Answers

The Question (ID Number 561)...

Are you aware of or have you given consideration to the type of tribal society which is becoming more and more prevalent around the United States invlolving people of all ages travelling in groups around the country following musical groups? There are large numbers of people who spend a majority of their time on the road with other like-minded people simply travelling from city to city and living as peacefully as possible and happier than they have ever been. It has eveolved from the Grateful Dead culture in the past to include a number of different groups and many more people.

    ...and the response:

I'm aware of the jam-band circuit you're talking about, but it's not a tribal society. A tribe is a group of people making a living together, and this is exactly what these people DON'T do. They make their living in conventional fashion, and go out on the circuit when they can. If may be fun and it may be very satisfying, but it's only tribal in a metaphorical sense.
