I'm a software engineer in my late 30s, working for one of the world's largest technology companies. I'm also an inventor. I have a strong interest in sustainable energy and other technologies, especially using information technology to enable sustainable business models and practices.
I've always been fascinated with the native American cultures Quinn talks about in Beyond Civilization.
On our honeymoon, my wife and I took a Caribbean cruise that included a trip inland to Chichen Itza, one of the last centers of Maya culture in Yucatan. At one point a tourist asked our tour guide Fausto, himself of Maya descent, "Why did the Maya people disappear?"
"The Maya people didn't disappear." he said. "The people have always been here. What left was the organization." In other words, the people left their civilization.
I never understood why the Maya abandoned their civilization. Thanks for explaining this mystery.
