If the gods have an equal care for all life on this planet (as I maintain in my books), then there is no necessity for them to “step into the picture.” If humans go on as they are, they will become extinct and the rest of the community can begin to recover. If we want to learn to live sustainably, that’s fine, but the gods will not “step in” to FORCE us to live sustainably. (Any more than they will step in to keep our aircraft in the air if they’re badly designed, any more than they will step in to keep our lights on if the electricity fails, any more than they will step in to keep our boats afloat if we build them badly.) If we want to do any of these things, it’s up to us. We are CAPABLE of living sustainably, just as birds are capable of building their own nests. We should no more expect the gods to arrange for us to live sustainably than birds should expect the gods to build their nests for them.
