The strategy of Erratic Retaliation is not in any sense a universal strategy for dealing with intraspecific competition. For example, many other species observe a pecking order strategy to keep the peace; individuals lower in the order tend to give in to individuals higher in the order, so Erratic Retaliation would serve no purpose. See Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene, chapter 5, for a wonderfully clear and comprehensive rundown on all this.
