People who “discovered” me through Ishmael feel something like ownership of that book. It’s “their” book in a way that later books aren’t, so they tend to be protective of it and to see later books as “not quite as good.” All the same, many readers have said that My Ishmael is their favorite of my works (as others have said that The Story Of B is their favorite).
