There were not “a lot of versions of Ishmael.” There was only one version of Ishmael, but there were a lot of versions of the book that ultimately BECAME Ishmael.

Besides Ishmael, only one of them was published, The Book of the Damned. Version one (Man and Alien) was written in 1978. Versions two and three (both called The Genesis Transcript) were written in 1979 and 1980. Version four, The Book of Nahash, in which Tales of Adam appeared, was written in 1980-81. Version five, The Book of the Damned was written and published in 1982. Versions six and seven, both called Another Story To Be In, were written in 1984 and 1987. Version eight, Ishmael, was written in 1990 and published in 1992. As for my “first book,” you have some choices: A Guide to Modern Mathematics (1964), Land & Sea Monsters (1971), The Boy Who Ate the Bus (1973), Our Mysterious Universe (1977), and Dreamer, my first novel (1988).

NOTE: Tales of Adam was published by Steerforth Press in 2005.
