If a flu pandemic were to kill off half the world’s human population, we’d be back to where we were in 1960, at three billion. If we then went on as we’re presently going on, it would take us only forty years to get back to six billion.
The only permanent solution is changing people’s minds about the food race, which can’t be won in any final way, because every “win” on the side of food production is answered by a “win” on the side of population growth; to achieve population stability we have to walk away from that race, and that won’t happen until people understand that pursuing the race is going to end in catastrophe.
