Becoming a Leaver isn’t like becoming a lawyer or a Democrat or a Roman Catholic. A Leaver is one who lives a Leaver lifestyle, which really means living in a community of Leavers.

If you were to transport a Yanomami Indian from Brazil to the United States, it would be impossible for him to live as a Leaver. In order to live, he would have to abandon the Leaver lifestyle and become one of us.

Becoming Leavers is not really an objective. Achieving a widespread understanding that the way we live is not sustainable—and that we’re not going to survive if we continue this way of living—is the first objective. Only then can we get down to the serious and crucial task for figuring out a way for us to live that IS sustainable.
