There is no such thing as “proof” in such matters, but there can be no doubt that the Hebrews were Semites, and it’s reasonable to suppose that their earliest stories were handed down by their Semitic ancestors.

The maps that were most helpful to me in developing my own theory can be found in The Penguin Atlas of Ancient History by Colin McEvedy. This is still in print, as is a revised edition (which I haven’t examined).
